Up the Apples and Pears

Support our orchards and enjoy British apples

Now is the time for British apple, so seek them out at farmers’ markets and in supermarkets. You may even get an opportunity to visit an orchard and pick for yourself … along with lots of other delicious British produce.

My favourite eating apples at this time of year are Golden Pippin, Herring’s Pippin and Egremont Russet. And for cooking, you can’t beat the beautiful Bramley, which holds its shape and doesn’t turn to mush in the oven.

With all apples, don’t look for the perfect specimen, it’s better to choose ones with a bit of scarring. These are likely to be the sweetest as the scar is formed by the leaves rubbing against the fruit as it forms. This only happens on the outside of the tree … which gets the most sunshine.
